History of Music Videos

A music video is a short film, video or montage of footage that accompanies a piece of music. Modern music videos were primarily used to market and promote the sale of the music.

The purpose of a music video is to establish a visual representation of an artist or band, providing an audience with a first impression of them and to existing fans, to fulfil expectations. Music videos are also made to entertain their audience. By the 1980s, music videos were essential to the promotion of singles.

History and Development Timeline

The first steps towards music videos was something called the illustrated song. In 1894 sheet music publishers Edward B Marks and Joe Stern hired an electrician and performers to promote their song by using a magic lantern. This was projecting a series of still images on a screen simultaneous to live performances.

1902- 1917 :

This was a forerunner of sound accompanied by a film. It was created by using chronophone sound recording with a chronograph film shot with actors lip-synching to the sound recording. The first ones were presented in France.

1926-1959:

In April 1923, New York City’s Rivoli Theater presented the first motion pictures with sound-on-film, a system that synchronized movies and their soundtracks.
This was the era where many musical short films were produced. Things like animations and Art deco-style backgrounds combined with artists singing were made. Sing along short cartoons were also created which is now seen as karaoke. Walt Disney also created an animated film that featured many classical pieces. Musical films were also important in prior to the music videos as people had imitated the style of classic Hollywood musicals from the 1930’s. For example Madonna’s 1985’s video of material girl which was modelled closely to Jack Coles staging of ‘Diamonds a girls best friend’ from the film ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’.

1960-1967:

This is when performance concept videos began to develop when visual jukeboxes were invented. Things called soundies were three-minute films featuring music and dance performances, designed to display on jukebox-like projection machines in bars, restaurants and other public spaces. Many of the era’s greatest talents, from jazz singers and swing dancers to chamber musicians and comedians, appeared in them.

1959:

Jiles Perry Richardson, who went by The Big Bopper, became the first person to use the phrase “music video” in a 1959 interview with a British magazine.

1960s:

The Beatles used the power of film to market their records and express themselves as artists. They recorded dozens of promotional clips, some with narratives and others composed largely of odd images that were broadcasted in England and overseas. Many rock and roll bands of the late 1960s and 1970s followed their lead, releasing increasingly sophisticated promo films that were shared with live performances on televised music shows.

1974:

Australia then created two weekly teen-oriented music programs premiered in Australia in 1974. Both prominently featured music videos, some of which were created especially for the shows. It then spread across the world and programmes such as ‘Top of the Pop’s” were also created and in 1981 MTV was first broadcasted.
